Depression = Anger + Grief + Trauma

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Pradeep Chadha Many years ago, when I started my psychiatric training in Europe, I realized that mental illnesses happen to those people who are not allowed to work through their emotional issues. It was then an acknowledged scientific fact that stress events in life triggered depression and other psychiatric conditions. But how does unexpressed emotions turn into an illness is something that mainstream medicine still has difficulty with. One of my first success stories in treating depression was a lady who had been on antidepressants and who had won money in a lotto game. In her case the money was the trigger for making her depressed. After taking her history, it emerged that she had more to her depression than the immediate event that was the trigger. She had not grieved over the death of her father. She had been angry with her then husband, who was threatening to separate. She had also undergone traumatic experiences at the hands of her relatives that she had not come to terms with. To my surprise, when the impacts of the causes were neutralized, not only did she come off antidepressant successfully, but she remained well without medication for many years till I lost touch with her. Another story that I remember was of a time much earlier than the above event. A mother in her early 40s used to attend the psychiatric services for the treatment of depression. She was on antidepressant medication for many years. She was not willing to come off medication. She had an excellent upbringing and a good personality. She had lost her child many years ago in an incident that she stated was not a suicide. It was an incident that had shaken her own belief regarding her abilities as a mother. Despite the efforts of the doctors, she was unprepared to allow herself to grieve over the loss of her son. She continued to suffer with depression. Most of the time the individuals who suffer with depression, have learnt to hold back their anger. This anger could be due to many causes. The commonest one is against one s parents. Though parents do their best to bring up their children, the children tend to carry some anger or annoyance about their parents. This anger gets compounded if there are elements of neglect, rejection or threat. Other factors are the parental strictness and disallowing the child to cry or express themselves emotionally in any form. The anger is then suppressed. Other life events like bullying and strict teachers add on to the anger. If the person has seen other crises in their lives, anger increases. Unresolved and unfinished grief is the other cause for depression. Anger and fear of the departed is the main reason for the grief to remain unfinished. This happens especially in the cases of abuse when the abuser is a close relative who has died. Unresolved grief is commonly seen in all forms of abuse. Traumatic events can occur in many forms. I once saw a lady having unresolved trauma from an accident that took place 25 years ago. She was under the impression that the event had resolved itself as it had occurred many years ago. On remembering the event a few times, she started to have aches and pains in precisely the same spots in the body where she had felt pain immediately after the accident. She was obviously surprised, but she learnt that an event that happened many years ago is not necessarily forgotten by the body even if we believe that we do. Traumatic events can be repetitive, like abuse, or they can be sporadic events like rape or road traffic accident or a physical assault. Each of these experiences individually, can be the trigger for depression. They can also affect the body and the mind in a subtle manner and one may not experience any major depressive event for a long time in life. A common complaint that family physicians encounter is- persistent and chronic fatigue with loss in interest and excessive sleep. This condition, when it occurs without any physical illness, is termed chronic fatigue syndrome. Fibromyalgia is another term currently used for similar symptoms. These conditions have the same causes, in my experience, as major depression. Depression, from clinical perspective, is diagnosed when a person has low mood with reduced concentration, reduced ability to enjoy day to day activities and reduced energy that has lasted for more than two weeks. The person may have a loss of appetite, with a reduction (sometimes an increase) in weight. Sleep may be interrupted or the person may wake up two or three hours earlier than usual wake up time. There may be guilt or a death wish especially if the person has a sense of hopelessness about the future. Dysthymia is a term that is used to describe long-term sense of feeling low that does not disturb the sufferers life in a major way. The quality of life is low because of lack of enjoyment. This condition is diagnosed when it has lasted for at least two years. In all the above cases mentioned, antidepressants are the main line of treatment in psychiatry. But if the anger, grief and trauma issues are addressed, medication is easy to come off. In most of such cases, the person may not need antidepressant treatment again. Pradeep K Chadha is a psychiatrist who specialises in helping patients with meditation and imagery using little or no medication. Christian Job Search: Is It Different?

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Roy Miller The short answer is no. I’ve known lots of Christian job seekers. Most of them share a few characteristics: They believe there’s something special about “Christian job search”They think advertising their skills and achievements is wrongful boastingThey have remarkably few skills and achievements to advertiseThey worry a great deal, but profess not to I can’t cover all of those here. Let’s deal with just the first one. I’ve helped a healthy number of Christian professionals craft job-winning resumes. You know what’s remarkable about each resume? Not one of them mentioned Christianity. Being a Christian is a fine thing, but it doesn’t belong blatantly on your resume. Your resume is NOT about your faith, or your opinions, or your clothes. Your resume IS entirely about your job performance and what the You, Inc. brand offers to somebody who wants to buy your product. It’s about achievements and the value they can add. If you use your resume as a pulpit, or as a commercial for your faith, you run the risk of alienating others unnecessarily. Don’t compromise your principles, but don’t assault folks with them either. Might it not make more sense to show your character in a job interview? That’s where it really counts. There and on the job. I knew a fellow once who called himself a Christian. His resume talked a bunch about vision, and faith, and character, and lots of other great things. His life didn’t show any of them. What difference did his faith make? Virtually none in his day-to-day behavior. He spoke no differently and behaved no differently. That’s using your faith to your advantage when you think it’s convenient. Does that reflect well on the person the resume’s about? How about the one he says he believes in? There is no “Christian job search.” There’s only job searching that Christians happen to do. If you’re a Christian, act like one on your job and in your search. That’s the only real difference I see. The good news if you’re a Christian is that you could have an advantage if you could see it. What’s the advantage? Simply that you should be, if you take their faith seriously, far less inclined to lie on a resume. That single fact could set you apart from a large majority of job seekers in the world. Walk into your job interviews with supreme confidence of a person telling the truth. That could make your job search different from the ones you’ve heard about. Copyright (c) by Roy Miller Roy Miller created http://www.Job-Search-Guidepost.com. Marketing: 5 Ways To Boost The Perceived Value Of Your Offer

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Lisa Packer It’s a common myth that the lowest price always wins. But in reality, people don’t want the lowest price: they want the highest value. If you’re stuck in the rut of competing solely on price, here are 5 ways to get out of that trap by increasing the perceived value of your offer:Ambience. Imagine lying on the beach on a hot, sunny day. Your best friend is with you, and he offers to go to the store further up on the shore and buy sodas for you both. He says the drinks may be expensive, and wants to know how much you’re willing to spend. If the sodas cost more than your best offer, he won’t buy them. Real people offered this choice in a study were given two different pictures of the store: One was the gift shop of a luxury hotel, one was a run-down convenience store. Not surprisingly, respondents were willing to pay far more for the same soda from the hotel. How your product or service is presented affects it’s perceived value. Make sure your website is free of bugs and navigational errors. Be sure the design is clean, looks professional and is easy to read. If you have a brick-and-mortar store, decorate it nicely, keep it clean and have a dress code for employees. Make sure all print ads and collateral are well-designed and easy to read, and product packaging is of good quality. Raise your prices. Pricing is one of the most effective ways of increasing perceived value. For example, which do you think is more valuable, a watch that cost $20, or a $3000 Rolodex? Is Mercedes really a better car? If you were to hire a consultant, which would you think is more valuable one that charges $50 an hour, or one that charges $250? If you’re the consultant, which kind of client would you rather have the one that hires you at $50, or the one that pays you $250? The $250 consultant will be much more highly respected. Her advice is more likely to be implemented. Because her higher price says that she is more of an expert, with higher perceived value. Be exclusive. Take a cue from the Franklin Mint, and limit the quantity available. Become a status symbol. The desire for status is one of the key emotional sales triggers. People want others to think of them as being wealthy and successful. And since going around telling people you’re wealthy and successful generally makes them think you aren’t, the impression must be conveyed more subtly. So let it be conveyed by owning your product, or using your service. Bundling. Offer several products or services together at a special price, or include a “free bonus” or two. More stuff = greater value. Show the benefits. Ask yourself, “What am I really selling?” For example, a grass seed company is really selling greener lawns and jealous neighbors. A maid service is selling status, saved time, a happy family and jealous neighbors. A hair salon is selling romance and jealous friends. You get the point. Sell the sizzle, not the steak. Use these tips to increase the perceived value of your product. You’ll be able to increase profits, without having to fight the low-price wars. That’s a value in itself. Does your marketing forge an emotional connection with your prospects? It can. Visualizing Your Way to a Healthy Weight

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By James Penn Do you still have a skinny picture hidden in the back of your wallet that you pull out whenever you want to relive the good old days? You may be onto something positive, and its more than just harboring dreams of days gone by. Many experts now recommend that dieters visualize where they want to be so that they can achieve their weight loss goals more quickly. That could mean fitting into your jeans from when you were 20, or just being a healthy person for the first time in your life. Visualization techniques help people achieve their goals by bringing it one step closer to reality. If done correctly, you begin to live life as if youve already reached your healthy weight, which reinforces good habits. Picturing yourself healthy is a good way to encourage you to stick it out and adhere to your diet and exercise plan. You have something to look forward to and you know what it will feel like once you get there. Visualization is more than a static image. True visualization techniques use all of the senses. You can close your eyes and imagine what it would feel like to lose 100 pounds, not just how great your backside will look in a new pair of tight-fitting jeans. Its also a technique that doesnt require any special skill, money, or time you can do it anywhere and no one will know that youre secretly visualizing your weight loss success. You want to start by fully imagining how your future self will be once the weight is off and youre at your goal size. Picture yourself sitting down to a healthy meal at a nice restaurant and envision the smells, tastes, and sounds around you. What feelings would you have at that very moment? Surely a sense of satisfaction one that will carry into the present and help you work harder to make that image come to fruition. Dont picture yourself sitting at a table as if youre a nearby diner. Instead, visualize the scene from inside your own body the new you that worked so hard to lose weight and get fit. As you implement visualization techniques to your daily diet plans, you can also reaffirm your goals as you do it by focusing on positive affirmations. The process of visualization can be addictive in itself because it brings about a sense of self-confidence and excitement about the future thats in store for you. Birthday Cakes

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Kate Rogres Birthdays are always special. It reveals the significance of our existence on this planet. Humans are the beautiful creation of God. So Birthdays are materialized by loved ones through celebrating them mischievously. Birthday without birthday cake is like honey without sweetness. Cakes are the exclusively baked, decorated, and intentionally added more glamorous flavors when it is meant for birthdays. Icing with different sweeteners, cherries, cashew, berries, cinnamon, apricot, pitas, nuts, chocolates and cream spread all over portray a lip smacking and mouth watering look. Birthday cakes are always been paid special attention of love and care. While tracing the origin of Birthday Cakes many interesting facts come in front. The word ‘Cake’ is said to have coined as early as 13th century and it is said to have derived from ‘kaka’- an Old Norse word. Some historians think that the custom of the birthday cake was observed in ancient Greece. Ancient Greeks began baking cakes using honey. Ancient Romans celebrated three different types of birthdays as well as different types of cakes. They primarily called them bread. Some in England used to call Birthday cakes as Pastries. Another tradition of Birthday cakes can be traced in the Middle Age Germany. There we find sweetened bread dough was made in the shape of the baby Jesus in swaddling clothes. In England birthday cakes are baked with symbolic objects inside. In Medieval Days objects such as coins and thimbles were mixed inside the batter. It was believed that the person who got the coin would be wealthy, while the unluckily finder of the thimble would never marry. Whereas today, small figures, fake coins, small candies are more in practice. Now a days even cup cakes are on the top list. Why it is round in shape in the very begging was a question. Scholars associate religious beliefs and technical compulsions for the same. Greeks offered round shape cake to the Goddess of Moon- Artemis as it signified moon. They started the tradition of placing candles on the cakes for glowing the cake like the moon. There are various types of Birthday Cakes in terms of flavor and content. Birthday Cakes for kids are very special, because they are the people who worry the most about their cake’s yummy taste. Most of the times young children like Chocolate and sweet strawberry flavor. Teen agers like whatever new in the city like Blueberry Pecan Streusel and Chocolate Espresso Cakes, Tiramisu Classico and Deep dark gingerbread. Grown ups like to indulge their tongue for Cheese flavors, Hot Chocolate Mousse Torte, wine flavored ones. Fruitcakes and Ginger cakes has a long cultural line too. Decorating birthday cakes with ribbons, flowers and edible ingredients add color to the presentation. Writing the name of the birthday person right on the top of the cake in designed way and beautiful style is also a traditional way of wishing. Now a days, candles and ribbons and stars and flowers are styled in modern fashion. Europeans are called the precursors of modern birthday cakes. The icing of glossy ice like covering is no longer the hype. In stead of that now the jelly icing and colored cream icing is ruling the bakery industry. Actually whatever is the manner in producing a cake, no matter if it is a home made one or a professionally baked one, its all about baking it with the icing of the smoothest sugar and egg whites with lots of love, care, affection and tenderness for the person whose birthday party is taking place as along with the future eaters of the cake. So at the end of the birthday party it is the baker who is responsible the most for the delicious piece of cake for which everybody is eagerly awaited and relished then. Offshore Company Formation, What is Offshore Company Formation?

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By D Morgan International Business Companies An IBC is a corporation that is incorporated (formed) in a zero tax or low tax jurisdiction and is typically authorized to do business anywhere in the world except its home country (i.e., an IBC formed in St Vincent and the Grenadines may do business anywhere in the world except St. Vincent and the Grenadines). Just as with U.S. corporations, the same person may act as the shareholder, director, officer of the company. As long as the Company has only one shareholder, one person may act for the company. If the Company has more than one shareholder then a minimum of two directors is needed. An IBC (also known as International Business Company or International Business Corporation) is a legal entity, usually a Corporation or Limited Liability Company, formed outside of ones country of residence. The dictionary.com definition of international is, Of, relating to, or involving two or more nations. (In this instance, you live in one nation and your IBC is created in another.) A business is, of course is, A commercial enterprise or establishment. A company is A business enterprise; a firm. Alternatively, a corporation is “A body that is granted a charter recognizing it as a separate legal entity having its own rights, privileges, and liabilities distinct from those of its members. So, when you create an IBC you are creating an entity that has been granted a charter by a foreign government to conduct a commercial enterprise. You have created a legal foreign person who you control. You can open a bank account in the name of your IBC in a foreign country. Your international business company can receive income. Your international business corporation can operate a business. There are a number of countries in the world that have greater financial privacy laws than the US, Canada, UK, Australia, China and other lawsuit-prone or high-tax, jurisdictions. With the advent of the Internet, a business location is really not nearly as significant as it has been traditionally. The location may now be no more digital data that can be accessed from an Internet server located anywhere in the world. Therefore, creating an IBC allows one to operate a business or hold existing funds securely and privately, off of the radar screen of your legal enemies. We have all heard the stories of attorneys who have their own full-time private investigators. They are hired by many law firms to track down assets of people who have lost legal battles. They are also hired to uncover the assets of potential legal targets. It is said that if they know your name and a little bit about you, they can find every account in the United States on which you are the signatory. They can even find your bank balances down to the penny. I have seen this happen and I have to say, the speed in which the investigator can find assets even amazed me. Attorneys use this information to decide whether or not to accept a case. If assets cannot be located, it would be likely an attorney would not accept the case especially on a contingent-fee basis. This is where the International Business Company comes in. The IBC allows you to hold assets out of your name in a safe, secure financial centre. At the same time, the IBC also allows you to retain 100% control of your IBCs assets. When an attorney hires a private investigator to locate assets, it is extremely unlikely that they will be discovered. Keep in mind, in the offshore jurisdictions we typically utilize, there is no social security number or social insurance number required in order to open an IBC bank account. It is a crime for a banker to reveal your association with a bank account to an individual outside of the bank. Your ownership of an IBC is not recorded in any public record. There are countries with IBC laws that take privacy very seriously. The asset protection provisions in some countries are extremely strong. Many of these countries are island nations that have become financially strong by offering a safe-haven in which to store ones money. One of the strongest IBC asset protection laws found in on the Island of St Vincent. St Vincent is located in the Caribbean Sea and is about a 35 mins. flight East of Barbados. The St Vincent and the Grenadines IBC laws offer substantial privacy of ownership. The St Vincent and the Grenadines Limited Liability Company (LLC) law provides an additional barrier. There are provisions in St Vincent and the Grenadines LLC law to protect LLC assets from being seized in a lawsuit if the registered office of the bank holding the assets is registered in Switzerland. Corporations have stockholders. LLCs Registered in St Vincent and the Grenadines with the Swiss Trust Bank are effectively judgment proof. St Vincent and the Grenadines IBC law makes it extremely difficult to establish who a director or principal of a company is since the Swiss Trust Bank has to abide by the Swiss Banking code and deny the existence of the company, its directors and who its customers are. Therefore, assets such as offshore bank accounts can be protected from judgment creditors in two ways: 1. Privacy because St Vincent and the Grenadines IBC law protects the owner of the LLC from being revealed. 2. Asset protection, because St Vincent and the Grenadines IBC law protects the assets within the LLC from being associated with a member of the LLC. Therefore, the bank account for your St Vincent and the Grenadines LLC can be protected from being taken away from you in the event of a personal lawsuit. Many people use IBCs to operate businesses such as online pharmacies, Internet gaming sites, etc., protect assets from lawsuits and provide for tax-free revenue for residents of countries that do not tax worldwide income. The St. Vincent and the Grenadines IBC is a vehicle of choice for persons seeking a flexible and modern corporate vehicle through which to do business. The IBC is exempt from any corporate, income, withholding, capital gains or other taxes on income or assets for 25 years. The phone doesn’t feel cheap at all, in fact it feels more sturdy than any other phone I’ve ever had. The all metal design makes the phone feel like it’s going to last for a really long time. I really like the look and the coloring. It perfect for a guy, and now there is a pink version recently released by Verizon Wireless that’s perfect for the ladies. A close friend of mine just got one, and the coloring is super cute for the ‘girly girls’. The pink version looks slightly purple in most of the pictures I’ve seen online, but is actually more of a rose pink. Camera - The Razr v3c camera is the best camera I’ve had so far. I’ve taken pictures that actually look good! This is a first for me, even though I’ve had two other camera phones. I’ve sent a few to some friends that were surprised that I took the pictures with my phone. That has to say something for the picture quality. I know that there are some camera phones out there with higher resolution, but I’m very much satisfied with the camera on this one. Features - The Razr v3c has some really cool features. Here are some of the ones that stood out initially. The voice dialing feature on the phone shows that Motorola has come a long way in their voice recognition technology. You don’t have to prerecord the names anymore, and it still works better than my old phone, even though I had prerecorded all the names. I actually use the feature sometimes. I never used it before because it didn’t work well enough on some other phones that I had. Another feature that really sets this phone apart is it’s VCAST abilities. I can watch stand up from my favorite comedians, or watch the big finish from PTI, a popular show that I love on ESPN. There are a lot more free videos to watch than I expected. I love the feature and use it habitually. Screen - The Razr v3c screen looks so incredible! When watching videos, it actually looks like the television! It really does. I’m very much impressed with it. The screen doubles as a viewfinder for taking photos, and the lag time isn’t as noticeable as it was on many of my other phones. In fact, I don’t notice it at all. Normally LCD screen change drastically when viewed from different angles, but with the Razr v3c I don’t notice it at all. Audio - The Razr v3c has an internal 22 kHz speaker, and sounds great. It does sound like a smaller speaker, but that’s what it is. When watching videos, there isn’t any problem at all. A group of people can easily listen and hear everything comfortably. Messaging - The itap predictive technology that Motorola uses took some getting used to for me. I had always used t9, and itap is a little different. Overall I like it though, and it’s just as easy to use as t9. Internet - This phone absolutely gets an A+++ when it comes to the internet. With new ev-do technology, this phone can browse the web much faster than any phone I’ve used. You can watch streaming videos that come in high quality. There is almost no wait time. Usability - I have one complaint about this phone. The operating system is a little slow. There is a slight lag that you notice when going through the menu. It’s especially noticeable when trying to respond to text messages. I would love to see Motorola update the firmware, I think that’s all it would take because the phone is powerful enough to be much faster. Overall - This phone is great. I give it an A+ overall and will probably use it for a long long time. Why Retaliation Affairs Only Make Things Worse

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Nancy Wasson Its not unusual for a spouse whose partner has had an affair to have a get even or retaliation affair. The feelings of betrayal and the emotional pain are so devastating that the spouse may want to hurt the partner like he (or she) has been hurt. In some cases, the affair is planned out in advance as a deliberate way to get even and cause pain to the partner. In other cases, the betrayed spouse confides in a sympathetic friend or co-worker and ends up becoming emotionally bonded with that person, eventually resulting in a sexual affair. There are other situations where the spouse impulsively picks up someone in a bar and has a one-night stand. The affair or one-night stand results from a combination of feelingsbetrayal, shock, outrage, grief, hurt, numbness, the desire for revenge, and the feeling that being faithful doesnt matter anymore now that the partner has crossed the line. The betrayed spouse wants to even the score, to seek comfort and solace in someone elses arms, and to prop up self-esteem and feelings of being sexually desirable. Theres also the feeling on the part of the betrayed spouse that the partner cant say anything about the retaliation affair because he or she did the same thing. Theres also often the feeling that the get even affair is the fault of the partner who had the first affair, and he (or she) gets the blame for everything that has happened. The betrayed spouse may tell the partner: This is all your fault. If you hadnt had the affair that you did, none of this would have happened. He (or she) may be unwilling to accept any responsibility for what has taken place, and he may become mired in blame. (This, of course, is a cop-out. Each person is always responsible for individual choices and decisions.) While its easy to understand how a retaliation or get even affair can happen, dealing with the aftermath certainly isnt easy. The relationship dynamics were already complicated and messy, and now they are even more so. Retaliation affairs only make things worse. Here are ten reasons why: 1. When the original affair took place, there was already one person too many in the marriage relationshipnow there are two people too many, with all of the complications and complexity that brings with it. The marriage problems are compounded when this happens. 2. The outside person who has been drawn into the retaliation affair is likely to end up feeling used and taken advantage of when the dust settles. And using someone else sexually never produces the kind of energy that you want to invite into your life. Plus, afterwards there can be lingering guilt and regret. 3. Because the retaliation affair is based on wanting to hurt your partner, nothing good can come of it. This quote by Charley Reese sums up why: It is never wise to seek or wish for anothers misfortune. If malice or envy were tangible and had a shape, it would be a boomerang. 4. Having a retaliation affair is right up there with cutting off your nose to spite your face and shooting yourself in the foot. This means that youll only be hurting yourself more than anyone else if you let your anger and desire for revenge get the upper hand. 5. Engaging in a get even fling will only drive a bigger wedge between you and your partner and make it harder for you to address the real problems in the marriage. It will also serve as a diversion from focusing on the deeper, underlying issues. 6. The retaliation affair or one night stand offers only temporary escape from the pain and distress. When the brief interlude is over, the heartache is still there. Theres no getting around the fact that You take yourself with you wherever you go. The temporary escape wont bring you lasting happiness or joy. 7. Getting even with your partner by having sex with someone else wont help you accomplish the goal of rebuilding and restoring your marriage. It will only take you further down the road toward dissention, irreconcilable differences, separation, and divorce. 8. If you have children, they can be adversely affected by your actions. Kids learn about relationships, problem solving, and how to handle crisis and anger from their parents. Its important to model the kind of behavior and reactions that you want them to learn and adopt in their life. 9. You never go wrong by taking the high road. On the other hand, you invite negative energy, disharmony, conflict, and unpleasantness into your life when you take the low road. It can take a long time to untangle yourself from the mess youve created. 10. The saying, Two wrongs dont make a right has been quoted through the years because its truejust because someone else did you wrong doesnt make it okay for you to do the same thing to them. Theres another saying that applies here: He who seeks revenge should dig two graves. Hard as it can be to resist the urge to get even or retaliate, the most helpful action you can take if you are the betrayed spouse is to find an experienced counselor who can help you cope with the painful situation. That way, youll have the support, encouragement, and objective feedback that you need to make sound, thoughtful decisions and avoid a rash knee jerk response that will tear your relationship apart even more.
